You are not alone!
Would you believe that despite all of the lumps and bumps in the economy, over 400,000 new businesses are formed in the UK every year?
According to Government figures almost 1,000 of these new start-ups are launched in the Winchester area!
It is easy to understand the appeal if you are currently stuck in a job that you hate and are being told what to do by a manager who you know really should not be in that position. But the same is true if you are unemployed and struggling to even get to the point that you can moan about your boss or if you have been made redundant by one of those ‘promoted beyond their ability’ types.
The world of business is rapidly changing and the digital revolution has accelerated the pace even more. This means that many of the conventional employment options are having to adapt or are disappearing altogether. There is no longer such a thing as a ‘job for life’.
Is it any wonder then that one in five of the working population are apparently dreaming of setting up on their own? The vision of working for yourself and being able to choose your working hours sounds idyllic but what is the reality?
Having run businesses for the bulk of my working life and I can wholeheartedly recommend the idea… as long as you are the right type of person! That undoubtedly means being prepared to step out of your comfort zone more often than you may like, to take calculated risks (which may not always pay off), to work longer hours than you would for an employee, and often for less money, particularly in the early days. Sounds great doesn’t it?
Despite all of that, if you are doing something you love, you will get up in the morning with a spring in your step (even if you had been awake during the night wrestling with a business conundrum) and have the thrill of being in control of your own destiny.
Having made the decision to take the plunge, the next challenge is to ensure that your idea is sound and that it has a realistic chance of creating the (sustainable) income that you require. At this point, with a liberal dose of positive thinking and a bit of Internet research, it is easy to assume that your business is not going to be one of the many who do not reach their first birthday. The truth is ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’.
Free Business Advice
At this point, can I strongly recommend that you take advantage of the help and support that is available in the Winchester area? You have nothing to lose apart from a little bit of time but everything to gain. Having an independent view of your proposal could make the difference between success and failure.
The good news is that Winchester City Council (http://www.winchester.gov.uk/business) fund a free business support programme for local residents! This consists of monthly workshops covering relevant topics, informal networking once a month, and the opportunity to sit down for a 1-2-1 with an experienced business adviser.
Winchester Informal Networking
The networking meetings are held at Café Winchester in St Thomas Street and generally take place on the third Thursday of the month between 9am and 11am. It is popular but very informal. There is always someone to meet you and to make initial introductions so please do come along.
You can find out more from Enterprise First or book a place at one of the events via Eventbrite.
You can also get your hands on our free 170 page book entitled ‘Start Your Own Business in Winchester’ - this is available as a downloadable PDF or if you are a local resident or business owner you are also able to request a free printed copy.
One of the potential downsides of running your own enterprise is that you can sometimes feel a bit isolated but I hope that this article shows that you are not alone. Not only are there lots of other local people in exactly the same position as you but there is also a strong network of local support to help you on your way.
